You may have heard of the gemstone "moissanite" recently and are wondering what exactly it is. Moissanite is a rare, naturally occurring mineral also known as silicon carbide which was first discovered by the Nobel Prize winning chemist Dr. Henri Moissan at the site of a massive meteorite strike in Arizona. It wasn't until the late 1990's that scientists in North Carolina developed the innovative thermal growing process that creates silicon carbide crystals. These crystals are fashioned into lab-grown moissanite gemstones that rival any early gemstone for fire and brilliance.
But is it right for you? If you're seeking the look of a diamond, but with a lower price point, then moissanite is seriously worth considering.
Charles and Colvard moissanite comes in a variety of shapes, like cushion, oval, emerald, square, pear and more. All of our round moissanite stones are extra brilliant, as they have the much sought-after Hearts and Arrows cut. Rounds are the most popular stone shape (in either diamond or moissanite), but emerald-cut and oval are the next requested shape.
Another benefit of moissanite? It is a 9.25 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, making it perfect for every day wear. For comparison, corundum (sapphire) is a "9" on the scale, and a diamond is a "10". While the scale is not linear (diamond is about four times as hard as corundum), it is still a very durable stone!
Many couples today are choosing moissanite as the price point fits within their budget, resembles the optical brilliance and fire of a diamond, and allows them to obtain a bigger sized center stone. Moissanite is insurable, and we also offer our Lifetime Warranty and Service Plan on all of our moissanite engagement rings as well, ensuring that you enjoy and love it for a lifetime!
