One of the largest misconceptions among shoppers today is a concern that people (family, friends, & colleagues) may be able to tell a difference between a lab-grown vs. a mined diamond. So it begs the question, will anyone be able to tell a difference?

I think part of the misconception is due to the fact that for some, it’s hard to accept that a diamond can be grown by humans. As if it’s not “mined”, then it must not be a diamond. This is completely untrue. Every tangible aspect of diamonds that we’ve come to love and adore are identical between a mined and a lab-grown diamond.

If you walk into your local brick-and-mortar jewelry store and ask their thoughts on lab-grown diamonds and gemstones, you’ll likely be made to feel like a fool for even asking. Largely because of a store’s unwillingness to embrace this new source of without-a-doubt, conflict-free and blood-free diamonds, grown in a laboratory by your fellow man and woman.

That’s the beauty of being open-minded. There’s no need to discriminate or romanticize one source over the other. There’s absolutely no compromise in terms of chemical makeup, physical attributes, or optical properties, since all diamonds, lab-grown or mined, are made of one element: Carbon.

Think about that; it’s like someone being able to differentiate between a cup of Starbucks Coffee poured in the heart of Seattle vs. a cup of Starbucks Coffee poured in Times Square in New York City.

So to sum it up, the answer to the question is “no.” Absolutely no one will be able to differentiate between your lab-grown diamond engagement ring and a mined diamond by simply looking at it.
