Carat Weight - 4Cs of Diamonds

What is carat weight?

Diamond weights are stated in metric carats, abbreviated “ct.”

One metric carat is two-tenths (0.2) of a gram—just over seven thousandths (0.007) of an ounce. One ounce contains almost 142 carats.

A small paper clip weighs about a carat.

How it is measured?

The metric carat is divided into 100 points. A point is one-hundredth of a carat.

Furthermore, the carat weight is measured to the thousandths and rounded to the hundredths

What are "Magic Numbers"?

Some diamond carat weights are considered "magic numbers." Why? Because their carat weight falls at exact or greater than the most desired weights and sizes of diamonds. All other quality factors equal means that there is a price premium for these weights. For example, half-cart, three-quarter carat, one-carat diamonds and so on exhibit these characteristics.

Can I tell a difference?

Generally, the difference between a 1.00 ct. diamond and a 1.05 ct. diamond will be nearly impossible to differentiate with the naked eye. Expect to see a slight difference in carat weight as the size increases by 5% or more.

Pricing Dynamics

Large diamonds are more rare than small diamonds. The more scarce something is, the more it is worth. So a larger stone doesn’t just cost more. It also costs more per carat. A 1-carat diamond weighs the same as four 0.25-carat diamonds. But even if all the other quality factors are equal, the larger diamond is worth much more than the sum of the four smaller diamonds.
Increasing carat weight makes a diamond rare and affects the value

Subtle differences in carat weight can dramatically affect diamond value. Two diamonds of the same color, clarity, and cut can differ in value based on carat weight alone
